📋 Biography
Omoyele Sowore is a Nigerian human rights activist, publisher, pro-democracy campaigner, and politician widely known for his outspoken criticism of corruption and bad governance in Nigeria. He was born on February 16, 1971, in Ondo State, Nigeria. Sowore rose to national prominence during the June 12 pro-democracy struggle against military rule in the 1990s while studying Geography and Planning at the University of Lagos. He later founded Sahara Reporters in 2006, an online investigative news platform dedicated to exposing corruption, abuse of power, electoral fraud, and human rights violations across Africa, especially Nigeria. Through journalism and activism, Sowore became one of the strongest voices advocating transparency, accountability, and youth participation in governance. In 2018, he officially entered partisan politics and contested the 2019 Nigerian presidential election under the African Action Congress (AAC), campaigning on a revolutionary reform agenda centered on anti-corruption, job creation, education, security, and economic restructuring. His “Revolution Now” movement attracted many young Nigerians frustrated with the traditional political establishment. Sowore has faced multiple arrests and legal battles linked to his activism and protests against government policies, making him both a controversial and influential political figure in modern Nigerian politics. Supporters view him as fearless, outspoken, and committed to systemic change, while critics often describe him as radical. Despite political challenges, he remains one of Nigeria’s most recognizable opposition voices ahead of the 2027 general elections.
